Central Sulawesi, Indonesia’s Rattan Heartland

Central Sulawesi is widely known as one of Indonesia’s important natural rattan producers. Provincial forestry data once recorded production of almost 20,000 tons of rattan from eight districts and cities, with Palu listed as the largest production center in the province.

From this raw-material base, rattan is transformed into furniture and craft. In Palu, home industries and SMEs use polished and core rattan as the backbone for chairs, living-room sets, baskets, and decorative pieces that serve both local demand and inter-island markets.

In recent years, brands like Bamba Rattan have started to push the design side of this tradition, developing innovative rattan furniture in Palu that already reaches national markets and is being prepared as an industrial design-based area.

For buyers and designers, Central Sulawesi’s rattan signature is clear:

  • strong, locally sourced material,

  • a living craft tradition in and around Palu,

  • and a new wave of design-driven rattan furniture that still keeps its regional roots.
