Everyday Weaving – Bamboo, Rattan, And Wood Craft Across Central Sulawesi

Beyond rattan production, Central Sulawesi has a strong tradition of everyday weaving and wood craft that supports household needs and small-scale interiors.

In mountain areas near Palu, artisans in places like Dusun Salena, Kelurahan Buluri produce bamboo weaving for items such as chicken carriers, selling them into traditional markets in the city.

Older references on Central Sulawesi handicrafts note that many communities habitually make woven products from bamboo, lontar leaves, and rattan – baskets, storage containers, and mats that function as practical tools and, when styled correctly, as rustic interior elements.

Local government is also encouraging new generations to pick up these skills. In Sigi, for example, the district government and provincial agencies have promoted training in wood and rattan handicrafts, positioning them as opportunities for youth entrepreneurship and eco-friendly SMEs.

Together, these practices give Central Sulawesi a quiet but distinctive craft signature:

  • woven bamboo and rattan objects that can transition naturally into décor and small furniture,

  • wood-based handcrafts for souvenirs and home use,

  • and a policy push that keeps these skills relevant in today’s creative economy.
