Donggala Weaving: Textile Craft That Carries Central Sulawesi’s Identity

When people talk about Central Sulawesi’s craft identity, Tenun Donggala is always part of the conversation. This handwoven textile has been recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of Indonesia, alongside other major traditional fabrics from across the archipelago.

Produced in Donggala and surrounding villages, these sarongs and cloths feature distinct floral, leaf, fauna, and geometric motifs, with careful color work and weaving techniques that have made them known throughout the country.

Today, Tenun Donggala is not only worn as traditional clothing. Villages such as Mekar Baru are promoting sarung tenun Donggala as a high-quality craft product that supports local income and cultural tourism, inviting visitors to see the weaving process and buy directly from the artisans.

For interiors and lifestyle, Tenun Donggala is increasingly used as:

  • upholstery or accent fabric for stools, benches, and cushions,

  • wall hangings and framed textiles,

  • and soft furnishings that bring Central Sulawesi’s visual language into modern homes, cafés, and hotels.
